The Noble Scarecrows

Elementals of Tezlon

In the Age of Scattered Stars, a tale unfolds of the noble and courageous Race of Scarecrows, dwelling deep within the verdant woodlands. These ethereal beings, known as woodland elementals, were destined to be the protectors of the Elements, arising from the ashes of a dark conflict called the War of Darkness. It was during this tumultuous time that a renegade Majaan named Narzya, wielding forbidden magics from a Lost Tome of Magic, breathed life into a new breed of elementals.

With an insidious spell woven into their very essence, Narzya sought to bend the will of the Scarecrows and forge an unstoppable army under his command. These fearsome creatures were endowed with the power to morph their hands into razor-sharp talons, capable of rending anything in their path. However, this enslaving spell also severed their connection to the natural wellspring of mana, the lifeblood that fueled their powers.

The Scarecrows who fell under Narzya’s dominion were bereft of compassion, fear, and even hope. Their sole purpose was to execute their master’s bidding and annihilate all who stood in their way. Like an unrelenting tempest, they surged across the land under Narzya’s lead, leaving devastation in their wake. Numerous Elven and Human settlements on the Eastern Continent of Karaman fell prey to their merciless onslaught until they stumbled upon their true objective—the Matagaan Slipgate.

Having vanquished the guardians of the Slipgate, Narzya commanded his horde to pass through the portal, setting their sights on the conquest of humanity. It was at this pivotal juncture that defenders from the realm of Avalon rallied against Narzya and his Scarecrow minions. A desperate battle ensued, and many valiant guardians succumbed to the overwhelming powers wielded by Narzya. Yet, amidst the turmoil, a beacon of hope emerged.

Majestic Manifest, a formidable Majaan, cunningly thwarted Narzya’s machinations by forming a bond with one of the Scarecrows, gifting it a fragment of hope. With this newfound glimmer of resilience, the tide of battle shifted, turning the tide against Narzya’s forces. Jaymolok, the chosen Scarecrow, broke free from the shackles of slavery and struck down Narzya with a resolute swing of a sword. The tyrant was vanquished, but his symbiotic companion, the Darkfinder, escaped in its ethereal form, clutching Narzya’s soul.

Slipping away through the portal to Earth, the weakened and defeated Darkfinder symbiote would enter a centuries-long slumber. Jaymolok Tate, having emerged as an unlikely hero, rallied his fellow Scarecrows, imparting to them a glimmer of the hope that had infused his being. Many Scarecrows willingly followed Jaymolok’s leadership, while some small factions, resistant to change, vanished into the uncharted wilderness, never to be seen again. Realizing the weight of their transgressions, the Scarecrows set forth to rebuild what they had laid waste.

In a gesture of redemption, the Elven granted the Scarecrows the ancient ruins of Threen, a once-proud city on the western coast, as their new home. It was within the hallowed halls of Threen that the Scarecrows began to establish their society, constructing cities that would eventually be known as the Scarecrow Empire. Recognizing their newfound purpose, Avalon bestowed upon them the title of Guardians of the Land, known in their own parlance as The Hooded Krow.

Within the Scarecrow Empire, five grand cities emerged as the pillars of their civilization: Octoria, Kalius, Threen, Havasheen, and Jaymolok. Each city was governed by a council of Hooded Krows, serving as representatives of their respective populations. As the Scarecrows flourished and established small villages, they found themselves organized into several tribes, each with its unique purpose and customs.

The Waygann, reminiscent of human Gypsies, formed a nomadic tribe that traversed the boundaries of the Scarecrow Empire. They embarked on daring expeditions, charting unexplored lands and amassing knowledge of neighboring kingdoms and races. Every Season of Change, the Waygann graced the Empire with a captivating performance, depicting the climactic battle against Narzya—a tale forever etched into the collective memory of old and young alike.

The Shi’Shann, a tribe akin to druids, immersed themselves in the sacred Season of Change “Rites of Passage.” Through these rites, they ascended to become elite Guardians of the Land, the revered Hooded Krow. Each pupil was mentored by an experienced Hooded Krow, embarking on a profound journey through the realms of the four elemental forces they were destined to master.

The Kay’jann, comprising the majority of the Scarecrow Empire’s population, resided primarily in the great cities. They were the artisans and craftsmen, diligently documenting history, forging exquisite items, and adorning the Empire with their skilled hands. Among the Kay’jann, the Majaan were particularly adept at harnessing their magic for defensive purposes, safeguarding their realm.

However, some Scarecrows chose a different path and spurned Jaymolok’s leadership, forming the Lost D’Jonn tribe. These outcasts, dwelling on the fringes of the Empire’s southern borders, adopted a more barbaric lifestyle. Though not inherently evil, the D’Jonn held a unique perspective on the world, forming bonds with the creatures and fauna that coexisted within their domain. D’Jonn warriors, towering over their brethren, stood at least five feet taller, their imposing stature a testament to their combat prowess.

Each tribe comprised numerous clans, with each clan represented by a chieftain or representative at the grand gatherings held during each passing season. Moreover, every tribe selected a Magis, an esteemed elder Scarecrow known for their wisdom and lethal expertise. Overseeing the Magi Council was the Oracle, Sej, the eldest Scarecrow known to exist, a witness to the fateful Battle of Narzya.

Delving into the anatomy of a Scarecrow, one discovers that Narzya’s creation was born from more than mere tattered rags and straw. The initial Scarecrows he summoned into existence were mindless and savage, merciless killing machines. However, their uncontrollable nature forced Narzya to exile them to the dungeons beneath his floating fortress. Seeking inspiration, Narzya turned to the Elves, striving to fashion a new breed of Scarecrows, ones who would eagerly heed his every command. Utilizing the torn remnants of fallen Elven warriors, Narzya skillfully fashioned their bodies before employing an ancient relic imbued with the power of the god of Shadows—the Chalice of Souls. This relic, combined with the dark energies of the Darkfinder, breathed life into the lifeless husks, animating them into the Scarecrows we know.

Within the Scarecrow Empire, four distinct types of Scarecrows can be discerned. The Noljan, known as Worker Scarecrows, possess keen intellect and talents in craftsmanship, literacy, and the arts. Often found in the Kay’jann tribes, they are the Empire’s artisans, though lacking in physical strength and relying on the safety of cities and villages. Many Noljans delve into the magic that flows from the enchanted wells dotting their urban landscapes, and their creations, rare and sought-after, garner admiration from other races.

The Uljan, or Warrior Scarecrows, dedicate themselves to the art of Zaya’Balak. Through rigorous training and bonding with bladed weapons, they become formidable combatants. Over the years, their regeneration abilities and lightning-fast reflexes sharpen, enabling them to continue fighting even in the face of dismemberment.

The Drikinn, Wisdoms of the Scarecrow, are the custodians of history and political affairs within the Empire. They oversee governance, serve as ambassadors to the Kattan and Elven Empires, and possess a deep understanding of the natural mana flows. Harnessing the power of nature, these sages heal the land and record its stories. Moreover, they mine mana crystals from the eastern mountain quarries, which aid the Noljans and Majaan Scarecrows in their endeavours.

Finally, the Majaan and Ajaan represent the bulk of the Hooded Krow, the esteemed Guardians of the Land. The Majaan harness the raw mana flowing through the elements, channeling its power to cast spells drawn from the land or stored within crystals and gems. Advanced Ajaan take their mastery a step further, deftly combining two elemental forces to unleash devastating flow spells.

Thus, the Scarecrows, born amidst the turmoil of the War of Darkness, not only emerged victorious against the tyrant Narzya but also triumphed over their own enslavement. Led by the indomitable Jaymolok Tate, they rallied under the banner of hope, dismantling the chains that bound them. With Narzya’s defeat, the Darkfinder symbiote, in its ethereal form, escaped with his soul through the portal to Earth, where it would slumber in defeat for centuries to come.

Jaymolok, infused with newfound purpose, became a beacon of inspiration for his kin. Echoing his voice across the Scarecrow Empire, he instilled hope in their hearts, a glimmer that would forever alter the tide of their existence. Many Scarecrows embraced Jaymolok’s leadership, working tirelessly to mend the scars they had inflicted upon the world. In a gesture of reconciliation, the Elven bestowed upon them the ancient ruins of Threen, a city on the western coast, where the Scarecrows established their new lives. And so, the Scarecrow Empire began to flourish, constructing more cities that thrived on trade and craftsmanship, engaging in commerce with the Kattan, Elves, and select Slith outposts.

The Race of Scarecrows, once enslaved and devoid of compassion, fear, and hope, underwent a profound transformation. They reclaimed their identity as the Guardians of the Land, donning the mantle of the Hooded Krow. Avalon recognized their reformation and embraced them as an integral part of their society. The Scarecrows, in turn, recognized their past sins and dedicated themselves to rebuilding the very world they had once ravaged. Under the watchful eye of Sej, the Oracle, and the guidance of the Magi Council, they ushered in an era of redemption and prosperity.

Such is the legacy of the Scarecrows, their tale is interwoven with the remnants of a dark past and the promise of a brighter future. In the tapestry of their society, each tribe plays a vital role, unified by their shared history, customs, and the undying spirit of the Race of Scarecrows. And so, they stand tall as protectors of the Elements, etching their mark upon the Age of Scattered Stars.
